BEHIND THE LENS
Caberbe Joseph creates elaborate sets, costumes and stage design, and directs his subjects to react and perform his cues as director and photographer. His work has a strong psychological feeling which is expressed with a combination of constructed imagery, studio lighting, set-design, and performance art. To perfect the intensity in his work, he manipulates skin tone, facial features and lighting. His photographs represent the exchange between subject and photographer, rendering an assertive and direct gaze to confront the viewer, through one-to-one scale relationship and straight-forward eye contact.
Caberbe uses a color palette that unifies most of his photographs. As a result of this unification, his work is recognized by others without second thought. Most of the colors that Caberbe consciously uses are red, orange, yellow, white, and black. These colors are synonymous with his images and symbolize personal meaning in his work.
Caberbe’s inspiration comes from other cultures who suffer from rejection and frustration due to economic stress, political climate, or violent conflict. He is also inspired by the western pop-culture and the violence found in mass media and the stresses of the 21st century living.
